User Comments about the ScanSoft PaperPort 11

I'm sure the previous reviewers were using an older build. My intent with my review is mainly to shed a little light for anyone else who is contemplating the upgrade/purchase. At first, I was hesitant to buy the upgrade from PaperPort 9 Deluxe to PaperPort 11 Professional, especially since the price was so much higher. It was smooth and uneventful install for me. Thus, I began to search for another solution. However, I decided to attempt the "clean" install on Windows Vista (per some random posts out there on disabling all non-Microsoft services and start up apps before attempting to install), and was able to install w/o a problem. Also, many of the reviews out there were/are so negative. Granted I'm using the newest version that is supposed to be Vista compliant. The new features are great, and I've not had any issues I can see with my MAX files either.I had to rate 4 stars for my review as I had to take into account the fact that I am a pretty tech savvy person, and I did my homework before purchasing, or I would have given 5.

ScanSoft PaperPort has the worst customer service of any software I have ever purchased. In addition, the user forums are weak and provide little help. I have also found this software to be particularly buggy and prone to developing problems, so the lack of support is especially aggravating.

I would definitely recommend ver. 11 over ver. I've used Paperport for a couple of versions on two different computers, and I'm fairly happy with my results. The biggest problem I have had with Scansoft/Nuance products is in setting up the older versions and in registering/authenticating the newer versions.

10, and with all Nuance/Scansoft products, the Pro versions are much, much more useful than the "regular" versions. (although usually about $100 more).Read the product descriptions closely for the different capabilities of the various versions. Paperport 11 handled the setup well on our Vista machine with no problems.Paperport integrates well with the Omnipage OCR programs, and scanning and text conversion seems to be better and quicker after we loaded Omnipage 15 on our XP machine. At my home we are currently using Paperport 10 and 11, Omnipage 15 and Omnipage Pro 16, Iris and Dragon -- the voice to type program, so we have had some experience with setting up Nuance products.Paperport 10 was particularly hard to get going on our XP machine, but eventually, after a little help from the tech support, we did get it set up.

The Paperport 11 came with the Omnipage 16 Pro, and they do seem much faster in Vista (but that's also a faster machine).Paperport works best as an organizer, but I also found it useful for assembling very large documents, for converting between pdf and doc files, and for including various types of files in a single document. Paperport Pro 11 claims to work with network drives, which seems like a big improvement. If you work with lots of documents or research, I think you will find Paperport to be helpful.

It's so much nicer than trying to stor receipts, copies of checks, copies of tax papers, stock reports and other paper documents. Dont know how I got along without it for so many years.

He likes his better now, too. I put off ordering PaperPort because it seemed so complicated on my boss's computer (he has an older version). When I got mine, not only was it easy to use and understand, I was able to show my boss how he even made using his more difficult than it needed to be. Thank you.
