This is the first and, to date, only game I have for the DS. If you're a Civ addict, you'll want to pick this up. The actual gameplay seems to be fairly similar, although I've spent far less time on this than I have on the PS3 version. I like it a lot. It's a scaled-down version of the console game, although it's mainly due to graphics. It's the only portable version (at least that I'm aware of - no PSP version yet), and it makes good use of the two screens on the DS.
As a huge Civilization Fan, I was thrilled to see that it was coming out for the DS. Since receiving it, I have already spent many hours playing this game over and over again. Although it is not as elaborate as CIV IV, it makes good use of the DS and the dual screens. It really reminded me of the original Civilization from back in the 80's, but of course with much better graphics. The easier settings are sufficiently easy for the novice player and the harder settings are truly challenging.I love this game.
THEY NEED TO FIX THIS SO THAT PLAYERS CAN END THE GAME WHENEVER THEY WANT TO.Think of it this way; you spend alot of time surrounding a city and then the game ends before you can destroy it. Don't buy this game.I was having fun playing it BUT the biggest mistake the programmers made with CivRev is that they cut you short when the AI assumes you will dominate eventually. I've played this ten times so far and each game was really frustrating when the "game ends in 5 moves" message pops up before you are ready for a victory. Rats.Don't buy this unless they fix it.
I expected it to have fewer features and be less complex than the computer versions of Civ. I'm a Civ junkie and love this game. This game is remarkably playable on the tiny DS screens. It's not quite as addictive as the full versions, but still quite engaging and entertaining. Happily it's not as watered down as I had expected.
So, it's fun to play different Civs each game. All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase. I've really been enjoying playing Civ Revolution on my DS. Trying Deity now.The dynamics of all the different civilizations are very fun. They all play a little different as a result (for both yourself and your rivals). The best part is that it's Civ that I can play while on the train to work everyday. In CivRev, it wasn't any challenge until Emperor, and even then by the time I won my rivals weren't close to catching up. A turn-based game is great when you're standing on a train getting bumped by people getting on and off every couple minutes.
In Civ 4, I don't usually play above Noble/King level. The pace of the game is really good. It's definitely simplified gameplay and the graphics are mostly simple and utilitarian. I miss some of the great epic games from other Civ games, but playing for about 1 hour a day during my commute I finish a full game in a few days, which is nice. The animated battles on the top screen are kinda cool.So far I've played full games through the 4th of 5 difficultly levels, all of which were still pretty easy. It's a fun game, not very expensive and best of all, mobile.
